Vienna

Events

A city has more to offer than just museums and buildings. Experience a city differently, join the residents during a typical city event!

Classic Film Festival

Classic Film Festival

From July to August every year, the square in front of the Rathaus is dominated by film and music. Operas and classical music films are projected on a huge screen all summer long, and there are sometimes also performances of dance and music. A big crowd always gathers to enjoy the free performances beneath the starry sky. All sorts of food stalls can be found at the square, with Austrian pastries and coffee in plentiful supply. The performances start around 8.30 p.m., but if you want a good spot, it's wise to come earlier. See the website for the programme. [Read more]

Viennese Waltz

Viennese Waltz

One of Vienna's most charming traditions has to be ballroom dancing. Shoes are polished, elegant gowns emerge from closets and the ballroom becomes a stage on which the whole city wants to dazzle - even the MSN generation has mastered the basic steps. The ball season traditionally opens on 31 December with the Kaiserball and runs until March, although balls are in fact held throughout the entire year. In spite of, or perhaps because of the fact that it's all very proper and formal, it's a truly amazing experience. The most important and expensive ball is the Opernball. See the website for the full programme. [Read more]

Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace

Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace

To get into the Christmas mood, you really must go to the Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace. Numerous stalls selling art and Christmas items are set up under a huge Christmas tree. Various choirs and orchestras entertain visitors with carols and gospel music, and the children can enjoy all sorts of workshops like wreath making and cookie baking. This Christmas Market runs from 22 November up to and including Christmas Day. With a bit of luck some snow will fall and the Christmas scene will be complete! [Read more]
