Ponte dei Sospiri

Probably more has been written about the Bridge of Sighs than any other bridge in the world. The bridge connects the Doge's palace, a former prison, to the notorious inquisitor's rooms. The name derives from a legend which says that condemned men could be heard to sigh as they were led across the bridge to their cells. The windows in the bridge allowed them a final glimpse of daylight before being locked up. Famous men like Galileo Galilei and Casanova were incarcerated here at one time. Gallerie dell'Accademia is Venice's most important and best known museum. It lies in the Dorsoduro district close to the Ponte dell'Accademia. The museum is housed in a former church, Santa Maria della Carita, and the adjoining monastery. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of Italy's leading museums of European and American art from the first half of the twentieth century. The daughter of a millionaire, Peggy Guggenheim was also the niece of another renowned art collector, Solomon R. Guggenheim. Following in her uncle's footsteps, she built up an impressive collection of modern art. In 1949 she bought the 18th century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. You'll find a superb collection of work by big names like Kandinsky, Mondriaan, Picasso and Miro. The eccentric Peggy lies buried in the palazzo's garden, alongside her dogs.
