Festa Della Sensa

Festa Della Sensa

On 1 May, the yearly Festa Della Sensa event takes place. This is the oldest event and was introduced during the Doge era. The Doges reigned between the 9th and the 18th century over the Venetian Republic. During the Festival, clergymen, important functionaries and the mayor gathered at San Marco Square. Afterwards, they left the square by boat and went to San Nicolo's port, where they, all together and according to tradition, threw a golden ring into the water. Throwing a golden ring into the water is a symbol of honouring the sea god Neptune. [Read more]

Venice Christmas Market

There's a genuine Christmas market on the Campo Santo Stefano every year. The typical Christmas stalls found in most big European cities are all here but, instead of Gluhwein, you'll find special Venetian products like unusual glassware, local gastronomic specialites and various regional wines. All stall holders must first submit their merchandise to a special committee which decides if it's fit to be sold at the market. Charming late evening concerts are a regular feature at the market. Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most inspirational people ever to have lived. His sketches and designs of aircraft and other highly imaginative machines are legendary. Many of these machines have been been replicated and are displayed at a number of locations throughout Italy. One such location is Venice's San Barnaba church.
