Charles Garnier was commissioned to design Opera Garnier by Napoleon III in 1862. It's a magnificent building, both inside and out. The interior is fitted out in red velvet and gold leaf, and features stairs of carrara marble. The ceiling is the work of Chagall, the famous painter. These days the opera is used mostly for performances of classical ballet. Attending a performance here is an unforgettable experience. Tip: if that doesn't fit into your schedule, there are daily tours. See the website for additional information. It's also possible to buy tickets for the performances online.
