Musee du Louvre (The Louvre)

{poi_name The world's most famous museum. It houses an incredibly extensive collection of art. The Louvre is situated in what was originally a medieval fortress and later used as a residence by successive French kings. The German invasion of WWII led to the evacuation of major works of art. Statues and sculptures were crated up and carried off ahead of the Nazis. It's hard to imagine that the Mona Lisa lay in a wooden crate in a French cellar for a numbet of years. The museum has a total of 300,000 works, 30,000 of which are on display. Entrance to the museum is free every first Sunday of the month.
