Midsummer fireworks

This annual feast of fireworks takes place in Paris on 24 June. The fireworks are fired off from Ile Saint-Louis in the Seine and hundreds of people gather on the Quai Saint-Bernard to watch the impressive and colourful display. Paris celebrates the shortest night of the year and honours John the Baptist, a Jewish prophet who preached the gospel until around 30 A.D. Paris dance festival

A different company visits the French capital each year to take part in the annual Paris dance festival. This year Paris plays host to Canada's Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, who will be in residence for three weeks. The Canadian company is famous for the creativity of its dance. By combining classic steps and new work, the public is treated to a spectacular performance. The festival sells out every year, so be sure to buy your ticket early! Each summer sees the right bank of the Seine transformed into a beach! It's a veritable paradise which comes complete with sand, palm trees, sun loungers and parasols. You can lounge or, if you're feeling energetic, you can join in various sports activities like petanques and volleyball matches.
