Restaurants
You'll find a bunch of restaurants, cafes and âbrasseriesâ in every city. Below is a selection of nice venues where you can enjoy local food and/or culinary delights.
El Escaldon
El Escaldon is located at Cava Baja 39 and is currently the only restaurant in Madrid to serve the food of the Caribbean Islands. Downstairs you can order raciones (generous portions of tapas), while upstairs there's a restaurant. The 'Conejo al Salmorejo' (rabbit) apparently tastes just the way grandma intended. Many 'Canaria', native islanders now living in Madrid, feel completely at home when they dine at El Escaldon. Our personal favourite has to be the cheese with chorizo! The portions are big but the prices are very reasonable. From a culinary point of view, that trip to Tenerife is no longer needed!

El Sur
This excellent cafe/restaurant offers an extensive selection of Spanish wines, tapas and raciones (big helpings of tapas). It's done out in the typical style of a classic Spanish inn and, thanks to the posters on the wall, you'll find yourself in the company of numerous Spanish film stars. There's a good reason for this. El Sur lies just 50 metres from Filmoteca, so it's a popular spot among young film professionals. With a bit of luck, you might just bump into a Spanish celebrity! One of the house specialities we recommend is the papas con mojo rodo, potatoes with red garlic sauce.

Viva La Vida vegetarian restaurant
Among the numerous eateries in the lively La Latina district, there's a vegetarian restaurant. This little eatery looks very appealing. It serves a hot and cold buffet, with many tasty dishes. It may be vegetarian but there's plenty of variety and lots of different flavours. They also serve cookies and desserts, and you can buy biological products. There's a small bar where you can order delicious healthy cocktails. Dishes are sold per weight. You can take food away or eat it at one of the small tables downstairs.
