Lisbon

Hotspots

Every city has its own hotspots. Whether the sun is shining or it's raining cats and dogs, there are lots of activities awaiting you!

Aqueduto das Aguas Livres

Aqueduto das Aguas Livres

The aqueduct came into use in 1748. Having supplied the city with water for over two centuries, it ceased being active in 1967. The total length of the water system, both above and below the ground, is almost 60 kilometres. Measuring just 940 metres, the actual aqueduct represents only a small part of this. The waterway is 65 metres high and has 109 arches. There's a foothpath along the aqueduct which is perfect for summer walks. You must, however, be accompanied by a guide. The aqueduct offers unparalleled views over the Alcantara Valley as far as the River Tagus! [Read more]

Basilica da Estrela

Basilica da Estrela

The giant dome and twin bell towers of the Basilica da Estrela are a distinctive feature of Lisbon's skyline. This church is the first church in the world to be devoted to the holy heart of Jesus. The basilica was built in the second half of the 18th century using predominantly white limestone. The interior features pink, white and grey marble. The tomb of Queen Mary I, who ordered the church to be built, can also be found here, as can a number of interesting paintings. Jardim da Estrela, a large garden with ornamental lakes, fountains and a music pavilion, lies opposite the church. [Read more]

Elevador de Santa Justa (the Santa Justa Lift)

Elevador de Santa Justa (the Santa Justa Lift)

Lisbon is built on seven hills. The city has an uphill town and a lower town, and the two are connected by lifts. These lifts are magnificent steel constructions with curlicued ironwork. Two booths, each of which can hold a maximum 25 people, go up and down inside an iron tower, covering a height of 32 metres. The eye-catching iron construction was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. You'll find lots of bars with terraces and shops around the Rua de Santa Justa stop. There's a wonderful view of downtown and of Rossi Square from the entrance and exit on the top platform. [Read more]
