Easter is celebrated in Florence in a highly unique way. On Easter Sunday, an ornately decorated cart loaded with fireworks, drawn by two white oxen, enters Piazza del Duomo. The oxen are unhooked and the cart then explodes to the sound of synchronized chimes throughout the city. This age-old tradition stems from the first Crusade, when the Europeans captured Jerusalem from the Palestinians. It's a huge spectacle that draws thousands of spectators from home and abroad annually.
