Dos and Donts
A handshake is the standard greeting in Hungary. Hungarians are not ones for overly effusive greetings. During a conversation it's usual to stand at arm's length from each other. On formal occasions, wait to be introduced. On informal occasions, you can introduce yourself.

Emergency number and police
In the event of an emergency in Hungary, you can call various numbers. The standard EU emergency number, 112, is also used here. In addition to this the following emergency numbers are also available: Police: 10, Fire brigade: 105 and Ambulance 104. Explain the situation slowly in English and the necessary assistance will be sent to the location. The operators also speak Spanish.

Public holidays in Budapest
As a rule people don't work on public holidays, and banks and the majority of shops are closed. Museums, restaurants, (cure)baths and other sights generally remain open. Public transport runs according to the Sunday and public holiday timetable.
