Bruges is a rewarding city whose picturesque aspects have been captured on canvas by many a painter. The Gruuthuse Museum has organized a wonderful overview of 19th and 20th century work based on this theme. One or two characteristic places and themes present a particular image of the city during the period 1850-1950 and also of Bruges' inhabitants, who eagerly purchased such paintings. The museum draws on items from the City of Bruges' collection as well as one or two recent acquisitions that have not previously been shown.
