Amsterdam's first Stadsschouwburg (Amsterdam Municipal Theatre) was opened in 1638. The wooden building was the design of Jacob van Campen and was located on the Keizersgracht. Joost van den Vondel, the famous poet, penned the poem 'Gysbrecht van Aemstel' for its opening. A new Stadsschouwburg was opened on the Leidseplein in the 18th century, but burned to the ground in 1890. Four years later, in 1894, the current theatre opened its doors. Amsterdam's Muncipal Theatre is nationally renowned for its (international) programme. Besides theatre, there's also space at the Stadsschouwburg for dance and youth performances. See the website for an up-to-date overview and diary. Useful tip: individual visitors can register for a public tour of the theatre at 3 pm on the first Saturday of each month (programme permitting).
