Waterlooplein

Waterlooplein

You'll find the perenially fun Waterlooplein just a few metres away from the Rembrandtsplein. The square was created in 1880 when the Leprozengracht and Houtgracht canals were filled in. In 1893 the square was taken over by Jewish merchants, who needed a place to sell their wares. The square continues to perform the same function up to this very day as it's now home to the popular Waterlooplein flea market. Vincent (Willem) van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, Brabant and was to become one of the most prominent Dutch artists of the 19th century. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. Nowhere else in the world will you see so many of Vincent van Gogh's paintings together as here. The museum lets you trace developments in the artist's work and compare his paintings with the work of other 19th century painters in the collection. The Flower Market

The Flower Market

The Flower Market is the famous flower and plant market located at the centre of Amsterdam. The stalls are built on platforms which float on the water. Previously all the flowers and plants were delivered daily by boat from gardens oustide the city. You'll find all sorts of flowers here, as well as typical souvenirs of Amsterdam. Although the market is a major tourist attraction, its atmosphere still has the distinct qualities of Amsterdam. [Read more]
