The Amsterdam Marathon takes place in October every year and has been going since 1975. In those days the Marathon started from the Olympic Stadium and, after a number of years during which the Dam and the Museumplein had this honour, it has now reverted to the Stadium. The route is known for its flatness and historical character, passing many of Amsterdam's beautiful spots. There are three distances: 7.5, 21 and 42 kilometres. Dozens of tents, over forty different performances, lots of terraces, free music every evening - that's the Parade. The Parade is a party for young and old, and offers something different every year. Two types of Parade exist, namely the winter parade and the summer parade. Amsterdam is the most extensive Parade of them all. That's why it's also 'the' place for new young talent to experiment. October heralds the annual Cinekid Film, Television and New Media Festival, which is designed for children from 4 to 14. Many international films are screened, including a premiere or two. The children also get to choose which film wins the best film award, the Cinekid Lion. They get to meet television stars and to participate in workshops on acting and presenting. Naturally there's an interactive media lab where they can experiment and play, and where they can take part in workshops on various media-related subjects.
